Sleep is Good!

I know, I know… Another TED talk. But I am someone who has suffered from insomnia on and off since I was 15 years old. Arianna Huffington is absolutely right. Sleep is everything. I have recently been put on Melatonin which is helping, I think! I recommend sleep to cure almost everything. So… Yay, for TED, once again!

Decided to comment more and not just read!

I completely agree with the lovely Ms Huffington about the importance of sleep and also the point she makes about the one-upmanship that bizzarely surrounds sleep deprivation.

I've been thinking about a little thing she said at the beginning more though, when she described everyone in the room as "Type A". In my opinion its the sort of label that is bandied around far too much and which is just as damaging as any sort of stereotype, be it based around gender, age, or in this case personality. I find the idea that the "Type A" (a highly strung and ruthlessly competitive individual) is the only leader (male or female) capable of success very depressing. It seems that "Type A" and "Type B" have been transformed as terms into "winners" and "losers" and in doing so all the nuance and complexity of leadership has been swept aside.

Am I being naive here though? Is it really possible to have leaders who are not "aggressive, business-like, controlling, highly competitive, impatient, preoccupied with his or her status, time-conscious, and tightly-wound" (thanks Wikipedia for the definition)? Instead, can I have a role-model who is competitive yet capable of empathy, business-like yet patient, and time-conscious yet not a work-aholic? If not, the black hole of the workplace is looking even scarier than it was before!

Okay, enough of my rambling now! Left to my own devices this could easily turn into an essay-length waffle...
